St Catherine's College actually began in 1868. A delagacy was set up by the Royal Commission in 1950 with the aim of enabling  poorer students to attain an Oxford desgree without having to incur the expense of belonging to an Oxford college. In 1931 the delagacy became known as the Catherine Society  In the early days the delagacy had a room in the Clarendon building and a library was made available for the students.
