UNIVERSITY

Oxford

University College was founded in 1249 by William the archdeacon of Durham.  There is a legend that Kind Alfred the Great founded University College in 872 but sadly there are no records to verify this.

A statue of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley

sits in the Shelley Memorial. This building was made specially to commemorate the former student who was sent down in 1811 for writing The Necessity of Atheism.  The artist is Edward Onslow Ford.

In 1810, a local art dealer, James Wyatt, commissed  J.M.W. Turner to paint the High Street in Oxford. Initially it was going to be the blueprint for a series of engravings. Visit the Ashmoleum Museum in Beaumont Street in Oxford and see it in the flesh. If you remove the people walking occupying the foreground in the picture you will notice that very little of the original view has changed.
