Nuffield College was founded in 1937 thanks to an endownment from the great William Morris, he of the famous Morris Motor empire. Whilst standing at the bottom of the courtyard, look up at the wheel shaped relief placed above the window.
In 1949 work began on the building of Nuffield College on Oxford's canal wharf and basin site. The pond featured pays homage to the canal basin on which Nuffield College is built.
The Nuffield spire, as well as being an attractive addition to Oxford's 'dreaming spires' skyline also has a functional purpose: it houses the college library.
