Nuffield College was founded in 1937 thanks to a generous endownment from William Morris of the Morris Motor empire. While standing at the bottom of the courtyard, look up at the wheel-shaped relief placed above the window.
In 1949 work began on the building of Nuffield College on Oxford's canal wharf and basin site. The pond that is featured pays homage to the canal basin on which Nuffield College is built.
The Nuffield spire, as well as being an attractive addition to Oxford's 'dreaming spires' skyline also has a functional purpose: it houses the college library.
